10th Congressional candidates talk about women’s reproductive rights

There was an engaged and attentive crowd at the HACC Harrisburg Campus as crowds convened to hear the Democratic candidates running for the 10th district seat. There were moments in the evening that were tense and others that were passionate as the candidates made their case.
All six Democratic candidates running for the 10th Congressional district in the state were in Harrisburg with the Supreme Court set to hear more arguments surrounding the medication. Every candidate was asked the same question and that was: What is your stance on women’s reproductive rights and specifically their access to medication which would allow them to move forward with abortion?
Mike O’Brien said, “I believe decisions along those lines need to be left to the woman with her family, her doctor, and her spiritual advisor by her side. We need to include the decision tomorrow and drugs that have been affected by 20 years with what we need to protect.”
Candidate Janelle Stelson said, “Women’s rights and reproductive rights along with civil rights, voting rights, workers rights, these are all absolutely imperative, Scott Perry has had 12 years to work on our issues and concerns and what has he done? Bupkus.”
John Broadhurst says he believes Democrats in the past haven’t done enough to protect women’s rights, and for him, that would be a top priority. “I’m in favor of reproductive rights for women. I think the democratic party has made a terrible mistake by not making an attempt to codify this, and if I’m elected to Congress, I’m going to make that a top priority.”
“Pregnancies are very complicated, and only doctors and the person who’s pregnant know what’s happening on a day-to-day basis, so I think women have the right to have the ability, to make all the decisions and the decisions that will keep them alive,” said Shamaine Daniels.
“It’s extremely important that we protect women’s right to choose and not get in the way of her and her doctor. It’s something that my wife and I agree on and every proud Democratic does not want to get in the way of that,” said Blake Lynch.
Rick Coplen said, “Absolutely, positively, definitively, we must codify Roe, we must do a constitutional amendment essentially if that what it takes but we have got to sure women’s rights, freedoms and bodily autonomy is guaranteed for all time.”
And moderators made it a point to say that Republican incumbent Scott Perry was invited to tonight’s forum but he declined. All the candidates said that they will continue to speak to constituents as they look ahead to the primary on April 23.
