(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A group of women business owners known as “Her Society,” in Colorado Springs, are gathering feminine hygiene products to make large donations to various charities and schools.
“We’re a group of women and business owners that come together and collectively support the community,” said Sara Colangelo, a member and owner of Sara Colangelo State Farm.
This month, the group is collecting tampons, pads, and other feminine hygiene products at various businesses. “Speaking to different organizations,” Colangelo said, “we’ve seen women having to use rags and leaves because they don’t have proper access to menstrual products.”
The group will host an evening to continue raising donations on Aug. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at The Venue at Almagre. One of the businesses accepting donations, is Ashley’s Attic, along with Merkai Spring, and Julie Kay Design Studio.
“I think when we think about donations and we think about needs in the community, we don’t ever think about tampons and pads,” Ashley Gillit, Owner of Ashley’s Attic said. “We think about backpacks, we think about school supplies, we think about canned goods for organizations, but tampons, pads, new underwear, no one really thinks about those. We just take it for granted that we women have those items and we’re finding out by doing this tampon collection event that it’s a real struggle and a real need among schools and non-profits.”
