Nonprofit pledges $250K for air quality monitoring in South Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Memphis Community Against Pollution (MCAP) has announced a major $250,000 investment for monitoring air quality in South Memphis.
During a news conference Wednesday morning, State Representative Justin J. Pearson (D-Memphis), who is also board chair for MCAP, stated the funds will come from the organization.
MCAP works with researchers from The Center for Engagement, Environmental Justice and Health EMpowering Communities.
“We do this work because of love,” Pearson said. “We are part of a movement for justice rooted in love. We fought for our land and our water because we love this place we call home. We fight for clean air because we love the people, our families, and everyone who makes this place home.”
Pearson says MCAP’s donation is the single largest investment to date of any nonprofit or known government agency to study the air quality in Southwest Memphis.
He added that clean air is a human right and urged community members to unite against the xAI Colossus supercomputer project based in Boxtown.
