Police hosted several gun turn-in events around the city on Saturday.
The goal? To further promote public safety.
A big part of that was encouraging people to turn in unwanted firearms and giving them a safe and anonymous way to do so.
Those who participated didn’t have to submit personal information upon turning in their weapons.
“This is the first time in several years that we’ve been doing multiple locations. We will have five locations throughout the city to ensure we can meet people where they are at. This is about how we increase the public safety and the safety of our communities. This isn’t just about reducing crime, but this is about increasing the safety in people’s homes,” said Glen Brooks, Director of Community Policing.
The events ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following locations:
- Uptown Baptist Church.
- New Life Covenant.
- People’s Church of the Harvest.
- House of Hope
- New Beginnings Church.
Participants received a $100 gift card for their firearm. $10 gift cards were handed out for BB guns, air guns, and replicas.
A total of 450 firearms and 135 replicas were collected.
