The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) is receiving $11.63 million in federal funding to build electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) announced Monday.

The project is one of six in California receiving a combined $122.9 million from the Federal Highway Administration’s Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Grant Program.

SMUD is expected to build nine EV charging stations “with five located in disadvantaged communities,” Padilla’s office said.

According to SMUD, the community-owned utility covers most of Sacramento County and “small, adjoining portions of Placer and Yolo Counties.”

The California Energy Commission will receive nearly half of the grant, $55.9 million, to install 21 public charging stations and one hydrogen refueling station for zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty semi-trailer trucks.

The City and County of San Francisco, the City of Sant Cruz, the City of San Bernadino, and the City of San Jose will also each receive between $12 million to $15 million for projects similar to SMUD’s.

“Reducing emissions from our transportation sector is a key component in reaching California’s ambitious climate and clean air goals,” Senator Padilla said. “But to facilitate the zero-emissions transition, we must rapidly deploy charging and clean-fueling infrastructure to keep our supply chain moving and improve the daily commute for millions of Californians.”
