Earth Day is two days away but many communities across Southeast Wisconsin got a head start on clean-up efforts Saturday.
Dozens of volunteers from multiple organizations joined the Dominican Center for Women Saturday morning for its third annual Earth Day cleanup in the Amani neighborhood on Milwaukee’s westside.
It’s an event U-W Milwaukee students and staff have been participating in for years.
“We’re part of the community, it’s where we live too,” said one UWM staff member.
Amanda Clark, housing coordinator with the Dominican Center says keeping a neighborhood clean takes an entire community.
“To get up, come outside and see that there’s no trash, no old liquor containers, no old tobacco products that play a really big part on people’s mental health and peace of mind,” Clark said “I think coming outside and seeing that your neighborhood looks just as clean as any other neighborhood in the city is, is a kind of a stress reliever.”
Community advocates also went door to door Saturday offering energy assistance resources to homeowners to help make homes more sustainable.
